Data center development has moved from a niche real-estate play into a national infrastructure cycle. With tens of gigawatts under construction across North America — much of it in frontier markets — cooling, power distribution, backup generation, electrical controls, and modular infrastructure all pull hard on fabricated metal. Compressed schedules, frequent design changes, and high cost of late delivery favor suppliers who can quote quickly, collaborate with engineers, and ship in smaller, more frequent lots.

For decades, many OEMs optimized sheet-metal and welded assemblies for the lowest piece price overseas. That model works best when designs are stable and delivery windows are forgiving. Data center programs are often the opposite: lead-time stacking, engineering-change latency, hidden working capital, quality recovery distance, and trade volatility can erase nominal labor savings — while years of offshoring have hollowed out local surge capacity just as demand accelerates.

Reshoring is not a claim that every part should be made domestically. It is a shift in the question from “Where is the cheapest shop?” to “Which supply network protects the commissioning date at the lowest risk-adjusted cost?” Proximity to engineering, faster revision turnaround, and dependable delivery increasingly outweigh distant low-cost sourcing for revision-sensitive enclosures, rails, supports, cabinets, skids, and related assemblies.

This whitepaper outlines the demand engine, why offshoring is straining North American supply, the economics of proximity, what buyers are experiencing on the ground, and a practical strategy for U.S. fabricators — including how Metcam approaches speed, product families, automation, and disciplined capacity expansion for data center programs.
